The Underground Railroad wasn't truly a railroad at all, and it's passengers didn't travel underground. In reality, it was a network of people who helped fugitive slaves trying to escape to freedom. From 1800 through the Civil War, as many as 100,000 enslaved African Americans used the Underground Railroad to escape from the South, where slavery was widespread, to the northern United States, even to Canada.
